Teachers have lost trust in government — Abuakwa South MP

Abuakwa South Member of Parliament and a member of Parliament’s Education Committee, Kingsley Agyemang, says prolonged delays in addressing the concerns of teachers have eroded their confidence in government.

According to him, the ongoing industrial actions within the education sector are a reflection of growing frustration among workers who have repeatedly waited for government to honour its commitments.

Speaking on the teachers’ strike, the MP said government must treat the concerns of teachers as a priority and mobilise the necessary resources to resolve the impasse.

He stressed that trust between government and public sector workers depends largely on the timely fulfilment of agreed obligations, particularly the payment of salaries and other benefits.

Mr Agyemang maintained that the demands being raised by teachers are legitimate and should not be repeatedly postponed.

He urged government to engage the affected workers sincerely and take concrete steps to bring the strikes to an end.

His comments come amid industrial actions affecting various parts of Ghana’s education sector. The teachers’ strike has disrupted academic activities in basic and second-cycle schools, while the strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has affected administrative operations at some tertiary institutions.

Although he acknowledged the financial challenges confronting government, the MP argued that such difficulties should not lead to indefinite delays in resolving workers’ concerns.
