Carlos Queiroz at the Black Stars training camp

Lack of training facilities influenced Queiroz exit — GFA

Carlos Queiroz’s decision to leave his position as head coach of the Black Stars was partly influenced by Ghana’s inadequate football infrastructure, according to Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum.

Speaking during an interview, Henry Asante Twum said the Portuguese coach was particularly concerned about the absence of a dedicated training and camp facility for the national team.

He explained that Queiroz was surprised that the Black Stars did not have a permanent base where the team could camp and prepare for matches.

According to Asante Twum, the former coach questioned the practice of the national team training at the same venue where it plays its home matches. He said Queiroz believed the arrangement affected the quality and maintenance of the playing surface.

“One of the reasons why Carlos Queiroz has left his role is the lack of infrastructure in the country,” Asante Twum said.

He added that Ghana currently has only one approved stadium, a situation which Queiroz reportedly considered problematic from a technical and scientific perspective.

Queiroz’s departure comes after a difficult start to Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The Black Stars lost their opening two Group C matches, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in Bouake before conceding a two-goal lead in a 4-2 loss to The Gambia in Accra.

The results have left Ghana bottom of the group without a point and placed their qualification hopes under early pressure.

A five-member committee has been tasked with finding a replacement for Queiroz, with its report expected to be submitted to the Sports Ministry on October 9.

The Black Stars will next face Somalia in a double-header in October, with both matches scheduled for the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana is seeking to return to the AFCON after missing the 2025 tournament in Morocco. The 2027 edition will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
