Ghana warns citizens of fake job trap in Zambia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has cautioned Ghanaians against fraudulent job offers being used to lure them to Zambia, where some victims are allegedly forced to engage in cybercrime.

The warning follows the arrest of six Ghanaians in Lusaka on August 23, 2026, during a joint operation by the Zambia Police Service, the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) and the Department of Immigration.

The operation targeted a facility suspected of involvement in organised cybercrime and resulted in the arrest of 79 people, including 69 foreign nationals.

According to reports received by the Ghana High Commission in Lusaka, some of those arrested had travelled to Zambia after accepting what appeared to be legitimate jobs, including online data-entry positions.

However, they were allegedly forced into online scam activities after their passports were confiscated by their employers.

The Ministry said the situation highlights how human trafficking syndicates are increasingly using fake employment opportunities to recruit unsuspecting job seekers for illicit activities.

It has urged Ghanaians seeking employment in Zambia to carefully verify job offers, recruitment agencies and prospective employers before travelling.

Ghanaians already in Zambia have also been advised to remain vigilant when responding to online job opportunities and maintain contact with the Ghana High Commission in Lusaka for consular support when needed.
