Demolition has begun at the La Pleasure Beach in Accra amid a heavy security presence, bringing renewed attention to a long-running dispute over the ownership and control of the beachfront facility.
The exercise commenced in the early hours of Friday, October 2, 2026, with personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces deployed to the site.
According to reports, security personnel arrived at about 4:00 a.m. and instructed workers and residents to leave the premises. Several structures have since been completely pulled down, while others have been partially demolished.
Workers and occupants were seen attempting to retrieve their belongings from the affected structures, with some reportedly distressed by the sudden development. Security personnel have restricted access to sections where the demolition has taken place.
The demolition follows weeks of controversy after management of La Pleasure Beach rejected a 24-hour directive to vacate the facility.
Management had argued that the directive was connected to a dispute over ownership of the beachfront land involving Labadi Beach Hotel. It maintained that the matter was before the courts and called for the demolition to be halted until the legal process was concluded.
The resort has also disputed claims that the land belongs to the government, insisting that the land is owned by the Ga traditional authorities.
