The University of Buenos Aires (UBA) is set to honour Argentine football icon Lionel Messi with an honorary doctorate, recognising his extraordinary contribution to the sport.
Messi will receive the Doctor Honoris Causa, the university’s highest academic distinction.
The prestigious honour is being awarded in recognition of Messi’s achievements and influence in football over the past several decades.
The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star has enjoyed a remarkable career at both club and international level, winning numerous major trophies and individual awards.
His greatest international achievement came with Argentina’s triumph at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he played a leading role as the South American nation claimed the trophy for the first time since 1986.
Messi has also won 8 Ballon d’Or awards and enjoyed a highly successful club career, particularly during his long spell with Barcelona.
The honorary doctorate adds an academic distinction to a list of accolades that already includes some of football’s most prestigious individual and team honours.
