A 27-year-old man, identified as Awudu Baba, has allegedly swallowed five SIM cards after being arrested with five mobile phones suspected to have been stolen.
Baba was arrested by police at a checkpoint along the Kasoa-Bawjiase Highway at about midnight on September 19, according to the Central East Regional Police Command.
The Central East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Nchor, said officers conducting the arrest discovered five smartphones of different brands in the suspect’s possession.
The recovered devices included an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Samsung Galaxy A12.
Five SIM cards were also found with the suspect.
DCOP Nchor said Baba allegedly removed the SIM cards from the phones and swallowed them when he realised that police were about to arrest him.
The action was reportedly intended to conceal information that could assist investigators in tracing the phones.
Further investigations by the police allegedly established that the devices had been stolen from the Awutu Bawjiase area in the Central Region.
The Central East Regional Police Command has since intensified investigations to determine how the phones were acquired and identify their rightful owners.
The command is appealing to residents of Awutu Bawjiase and surrounding communities who have recently lost mobile phones to report their cases to the police.
Baba remains in police custody as investigations continue.
