New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives in the Manhyia South constituency have called on the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to apologise to the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, over an alleged confrontation involving an EOCO official at the Accra High Court.
The constituency executives made the demand at a press conference on Monday, 28 September, where they expressed concern about what they described as the “harassment” and “disgraceful” treatment of the MP at the court premises.
They described the official’s conduct as unprofessional and urged EOCO to investigate the incident and apologise to the MP.
Manhyia South constituency communications officer Joseph Appiah said an EOCO official approached Mr Baffour Awuah after he had left the courtroom, where he had been representing a client.
Mr Appiah said the official’s conduct was unprofessional and called on EOCO to investigate the incident and apologise to the MP.
The constituency executives also dismissed claims that the MP had been served with a letter which he later refused to accept.
They called for a proper investigation into the incident to establish what happened and clarify the circumstances surrounding the encounter.
The executives also raised wider concerns about what they described as the arrest and treatment of NPP members under the current government.
They claimed that 31 NPP members had been arrested since the government assumed office, alleging that state institutions were being used against opposition members.
The claims were made by the constituency executives and were not independently established at the press conference.
The constituency urged the public to take note of what it described as a pattern of intimidation and called on the relevant authorities to uphold due process when dealing with political opponents.
