The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has announced simultaneous fibre cuts along three major routes, disrupting telecommunications services across Ghana’s five Northern Regions and parts of the Oti Region.
The incidents affected the Kintampo-Buipe, Wakawaka-Bamboi and Hohoe-Jasikan fibre routes, which provide critical connectivity to the affected areas.
According to the Minister, the first incident occurred at 0419 GMT on the Kintampo-Buipe route, affecting the MTN section.
Two additional cuts were subsequently recorded on the Wakawaka-Bamboi route, affecting Telecel’s fibre infrastructure at 1136 GMT, and the Hohoe-Jasikan route, involving the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), at 1125 GMT.
Mr George said technical teams from MTN Ghana, Telecel Ghana and NITA had been deployed to investigate the incidents, determine the causes and restore connectivity.
The multiple fibre cuts have caused significant disruptions to telecommunications services, with 694 2G and 3G sites and 521 4G sites experiencing service outages or substantial degradation.
The Minister acknowledged the persistent challenges posed by fibre cuts to telecommunications service delivery but expressed optimism that the affected services would begin to return within a few hours.
He said the technical teams were working under the supervision of the National Communications Authority (NCA) to expedite restoration efforts.
Mr George apologised to customers and residents in the affected regions for the inconvenience caused by the disruptions and assured them of ongoing efforts to restore services.
