Two people are receiving treatment after sustaining gunshot wounds during a violent clash between rival groups at an illegal mining site at Behenase, near Awiregya, in the Kwahu West Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The incident occurred when a confrontation between the two groups at the mining site escalated, leading to the use of firearms and sending residents into fear.
The victims were reportedly rushed to the Holy Family Hospital in Nkawkaw, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
One of the victims is said to have suffered serious injuries to his genital area during the incident. His condition is being monitored by medical staff.
According to residents, tensions have been building around illegal mining activities, with similar confrontations reportedly occurring in the community in the past.
The Assembly Member for the Awiregya Electoral Area, Sampson Tenkorang, described the latest incident as disturbing and called for urgent action from the authorities.
He appealed to National Security and other law enforcement agencies to intensify their operations in the area and take measures to stop illegal mining activities that could threaten the safety of residents.
Mr Tenkorang said stronger security measures were needed to prevent further clashes and protect lives and property.
Residents have also called for an increased security presence in Behenase and surrounding communities.
They want authorities to step up enforcement against illegal mining operators and address the tensions that have contributed to repeated incidents of violence.
The latest shooting has heightened fears among residents, who say decisive action is needed to restore calm and prevent further bloodshed in the area.
