The Tema Regional Police Command has seized 2,213 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp from an abandoned wooden canoe on the River Volta.
The suspected narcotics were intercepted at about 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, by the Marine Police Detachment at Ada during a routine patrol around Tuanikopey Island.
According to the Police, the occupants of the canoe fled after noticing the patrol team and abandoned both the canoe and its contents.
A search of the canoe led to the discovery of 29 sacks containing the suspected narcotic substances. The slabs had reportedly been wrapped in yellow cellotape.
The Police also recovered 14 25-litre gallons, 12 of which contained pre-mixed fuel.
Two Yamaha outboard motors were also found in the canoe. The engines had capacities of 40 horsepower and 30 horsepower.
In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs of the Tema Regional Police Command, ASP Dede Dzakpasu, the suspected narcotics were taken to the Ada District Police Headquarters.
The outboard motors and pre-mixed fuel were also conveyed to the station as investigations continued.
The Police are now working to identify and arrest the persons who abandoned the canoe and the suspected narcotics.
