The Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA) has announced plans to withdraw its vehicles from operation indefinitely from September 21, 2026, over what it describes as increasing vehicle maintenance costs and other challenges facing commercial transport operators.
The association says its members will park their vehicles until the concerns raised with the government receive attention.
PROTOA Public Relations Officer, Samuel Adu-Yeboah, disclosed the planned strike during an interview on Wednesday, September 16.
According to him, the cost of maintaining commercial vehicles has increased significantly, putting additional pressure on transport owners and operators.
He said the rising prices of spare parts and other vehicle components were partly linked to port charges, taxes and other expenses associated with importing them into Ghana.
Mr Adu-Yeboah explained that the increasing cost of operations had made it difficult for transport operators to sustain their businesses under the current conditions.
He said PROTOA had already informed both the public and the government about the planned industrial action.
The association issued a public notice on September 9 to highlight the challenges confronting its members and to draw attention to the rising cost of vehicle maintenance.
However, Mr Adu-Yeboah said the concerns raised had not received the needed response from the authorities.
Despite the planned strike, he indicated that PROTOA remained willing to engage the government and find a solution before September 21.
He said the association would be prepared to suspend the action if the Transport Ministry was ready to meet with its leadership for negotiations.
“If the Transport Ministry is ready to meet up, to go on a negotiation table, we are good to go,” he said.
