Power has been restored to Gomoa Potsin in the Central Region after the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) disconnected the community following a confrontation between its staff and a resident.
The community endured three days without electricity after an ECG monitoring team was reportedly attacked during an inspection exercise.
Speaking in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report, the Assemblyman for the Potsin Electoral Area, Ebenezer Adams, said the community had apologised to ECG and condemned the attack on its personnel.
“We render an unqualified apology to the ECG staff, especially those who got injured during the Monday incident,” he said.
According to Mr Adams, the incident happened on Monday when ECG officials visited the community to inspect meters and disconnect customers with outstanding electricity bills.
He explained that the team encountered a household with a reportedly faulty meter that had been reconnected several times after previous disconnections.
“When they come, they tell him to report the issue at the office. But whenever they disconnect and they go, that is when…the owner of the meter reconnects,” he said.
Mr Adams said tensions rose when the meter owner confronted the ECG officials, leading to a physical altercation. One of the staff members reportedly sustained a head injury and was taken to a clinic for treatment.
He condemned the attack and said residents had assured the police and ECG that they would hand over the alleged assailant, who remains at large, if he was found.
“We have assured them that whenever we see him, we’ll make sure we bring him to the police station so that he can face the full rigour of the law,” he said.
The assemblyman added that ECG dispatched a team to restore electricity to the affected households after the community apologised.
“As I’m talking to you now, they sent their men around, and they are now reconnecting the power,” he said.
The three-day power outage disrupted businesses and heightened security concerns among residents.
Shop owner Elizabeth Tetteh said she lost ice cream stock during the outage and struggled to attract customers because her drinking spot could not keep beverages cold.
Another resident, Nana Yaw, reported that thieves had taken advantage of the darkness to break into one of his apartments and steal electrical cables.
Residents have since welcomed the restoration of electricity, while continuing to condemn the attack on ECG personnel.
