A total of 859 Colts clubs across Ghana are set to take part in the 2026/27 season as the Ghana Football Association continues its efforts to expand grassroots football.
The new season was officially launched on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
The launch also introduced new initiatives aimed at giving young players more opportunities to compete, develop and gain recognition.
According to GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, the Ashanti Region has the highest number of active Colts clubs with 245.
Greater Accra follows with 216 clubs, while Brong Ahafo and Northern have 98 clubs each. Central has 90, Western 50, Eastern 26, Upper East 15, Upper West 11 and Volta 10.
The 2026/27 season will also feature the KIVO/JLAB U-17 Colts Inter-Club Championship.
The new competition is expected to give young players another platform to gain competitive experience and improve their development.
The GFA is also introducing the first-ever Colts Awards.
The awards will recognise outstanding players, coaches, clubs, officials and other individuals who contribute to the development of grassroots football.
The association said the awards would help give greater visibility to the work being done by people across the Colts system.
The season is the sixth consecutive year since the GFA revived and restructured Colts football in 2020.
GFA president, Simeon-Okraku said the system had already produced several players who went on to represent Ghana at the highest level.
Former Colts players who became prominent stars include Asamoah Gyan, Stephen Appiah, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, Anthony Yeboah, Sammy Kuffour, Thomas Partey, Laryea Kingston and Yaw Preko.
