The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has called on the government and the Ministry of Education to urgently complete the Weija-Gbawe STEM School.
The project was initiated under the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo but remains unfinished.
According to the MP, completing the facility has become more urgent following the challenges thousands of students faced in securing placement into Senior High Schools this year.
He said the school was originally planned to create additional space for students and reduce pressure on existing schools in the constituency.
“The school was built to at least accommodate our school children and to ease the pressure on the existing schools,” he said.
Jerry Ahmed said the current pressure on Senior High School facilities had shown the importance of completing the project. He noted that many students had been left without immediate placement because of limited space.
“This year, we have seen thousands of students stranded because of the pressure on the existing schools. This is exactly why we need to complete this facility,” he said.
The MP disclosed that the project is about 70 per cent complete, with approximately 30 per cent of the work remaining.
He therefore urged the government to provide the necessary support to ensure that the project is completed.
Jerry Ahmed also called for political differences to be put aside, stressing that the welfare and education of children should be the main priority.
He made the appeal during a ceremony at which educational materials were presented to students from the constituency who had gained admission to various Senior High Schools.
He said that while providing learning materials to students was important, the provision of adequate educational infrastructure was equally necessary.
“We can continue to support our children with educational materials but we must also provide the infrastructure they need,” he said.
