The Kusaug Youth Movement has called for an independent investigation into the alleged assault and killing of a lecturer at the Gbewaa College of Education in the Upper East Region.
Issaka Abdulai was allegedly beaten to death by military personnel operating in Bawku on Friday, September 11.
In a statement dated September 12, the group alleged that Mr Abdulai was unarmed when he was attacked by soldiers of the Joint Task Force (JTF) deployed to maintain peace in Bawku.
According to the movement, the incident occurred while the lecturer was returning home from work on his motorcycle, shortly after the commencement of curfew hours.
The Kusaug Youth Movement described the alleged incident as unlawful and urged the government to urgently intervene and ensure an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr Abdulai’s death.
The group further alleged that the incident was not isolated, pointing to what it described as a broader pattern of alleged brutality against civilians in conflict-affected communities.
It cited Garu, Bugri, Binduri, Bawku, Ashaiman and Wa, alleging that civilians in those areas had been subjected to excessive force by security personnel.
The movement is demanding an immediate and transparent investigation by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), in collaboration with an independent panel of the Military High Command.
It is also calling for all security personnel found to have been involved in the incident to be identified, interdicted and prosecuted for murder under the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
