Seven illegal miners have been confirmed dead following the collapse of a mining pit at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region.
Four additional individuals are still feared to be trapped underground as rescue teams persist in their efforts to reach them after the incident that occurred on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
The collapse took place around 11:00 p.m. while the miners were reportedly engaged in their search for gold within the pit.
Reports suggest that two miners who were not present in the pit at the time of the collapse hurried to the community to request assistance.
Residents then organized a search and rescue team and notified the Police along with other relevant emergency agencies.
Rescuers worked throughout the night and successfully retrieved the remains of seven out of the eleven miners trapped under the debris.
Five of the deceased have reportedly been identified as residents of Moseaso, while the other two are said to belong to the Asaman Tamfoe community.
Personnel from the Anyinam District Police Command, the Ghana National Ambulance Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and community volunteers are currently present at the site.
The teams are continuing their search for the remaining four miners who are believed to be trapped in the collapsed pit.
