The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), with support from the Ghana Police Service and National Security, has seized cigarette-shaped candy at Makola Market in Accra.
The seizure came after the FDA received complaints and saw social media posts about the sale of the products in Ghana.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, August 29, 2026, the FDA said the products were taken during an enforcement operation. One person suspected of selling the candy was also arrested.
The Authority explained that the depiction and advertising of tobacco and tobacco-related products are prohibited under the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), and the Tobacco Control Regulations, 2016 (L.I. 2247).
The FDA also said the regulations do not allow tobacco and tobacco-related products to be advertised or displayed in the media or at points of sale.
According to the Authority, the enforcement exercise is part of its ongoing efforts to make sure that regulated products sold on the Ghanaian market are safe for the public.
The FDA assured the public that it will continue to take action against products and activities that do not meet Ghana’s public health and regulatory requirements.
