The Kwantene Traditional Council in the Goaso Traditional Area of the Ahafo Region has called for restrictions on the sale and public consumption of Akpeteshie, citing concerns over alcohol-related disturbances and community welfare.
The directive was contained in a letter dated August 12, 2026, signed by Nana Baffour Awuah Diasepamenhene, Chief of Kwantene, and addressed to the Municipal Chief Executive of the Goaso Municipal Assembly.
According to the letter, the decision was taken following what the Traditional Council described as persistent public disturbances, conflicts linked to alcohol consumption and the alleged desecration of sacred communal water bodies.
The Chief said he had consulted the Queen Mother of Goaso, the Goasohemaa, before deciding to restrict the open sale and public consumption of Akpeteshie within Kwantene.
Under the proposed measures, the open sale and commercial distribution of Akpeteshie in the township would be prohibited until further notice.
However, the Traditional Council stressed that other commercial activities and the sale of other beverages would continue to be allowed.
The Council also wants public intoxication and disruptive behaviour associated with Akpeteshie consumption to be prohibited.
Nana Baffour Awuah Diasepamenhene said the uncontrolled sale and consumption of the local gin had contributed to an increase in police cases and unrest in the community.
The Traditional Council is therefore seeking the formal backing of the Goaso Municipal Assembly to give the proposed restrictions legal and enforcement support.
The request, according to the letter, is being channelled through the Municipal Police Commander, with the aim of enabling the Ghana Police Service to monitor and enforce the proposed measures.
