The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has directed the Inspector-General of Police to investigate how an arrested person was assaulted after a breach of police custody.
The Minister has ordered the police to determine how civilians gained access to the arrested person and identify any police officers who may have facilitated, allowed or ignored the breach.
He also directed that disciplinary action be taken against any police officer found responsible after the investigation.
The Inspector-General of Police has further been instructed to immediately identify, arrest and investigate the civilians allegedly involved in the assault in accordance with the law.
In addition, Mr Mohammed-Mubarak has ordered the police to question all supervising officers who were directly responsible for the custody and supervision of the persons involved.
He also directed the police to ensure that everyone arrested in connection with the incidents is treated strictly according to the law, without fear or favour.
The directives are intended to establish accountability and ensure that both civilians and police officers found to have broken the law face appropriate action.
The arrest follows a viral incident involving a pastor who was arrested for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad.
While in handcuffs at the Ghana Police Service headquarters, a civilian was captured on video slapping the detained suspect, sparking widespread public debate and calls for an investigation into the security breach and assault.
