Memphis Depay is set to leave Brazilian club Corinthians after the club’s board decided not to renew the Dutch forward’s contract, bringing an end to a turbulent period over his future.
The decision comes after weeks of negotiations in which both sides had appeared close to reaching an agreement on a new two-year contract.
Depay had reportedly accepted a reduction in his salary as part of the proposed renewal, while Corinthians had also agreed to settle a debt owed to the player over the duration of the new deal.
However, the club has now reversed its position, officially citing concerns about its financial situation. Corinthians confirmed that the decision not to renew Depay was made because of the need to protect the club’s financial health.
The development has angered the 32-year-old forward, who has accused the club of failing to honour an agreement he says had already been approved by the president and the sporting, legal and financial departments.
Depay said he was disappointed by the decision and indicated that he would take steps to protect his interests. The disagreement could potentially lead to further legal action as the two sides attempt to resolve the financial issues surrounding his contract.
Depay joined Corinthians in September 2024 after leaving Spanish side Atlético Madrid. During his time in Brazil, he became an important player for the club and helped them win the Campeonato Paulista and Copa do Brasil in 2025, followed by the Supercopa do Brasil in 2026.
He leaves Corinthians with 20 goals and 15 assists from 79 appearances, according to reports.
