Chelsea have officially completed the signing of Spanish left-back Pep Chavarría from Rayo Vallecano in a deal worth €19 million, with a further €2 million available in add-ons.
The 28-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the London club, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2031.
His arrival is expected to strengthen Chelsea’s options at left-back as new manager Xabi Alonso continues to reshape the squad.
Chavarría expressed his excitement after completing the move, particularly highlighting the influence of Alonso in his decision to join Chelsea.
“I’m here thanks to Xabi. For me, he’s one of the best coaches right now. I am so happy to join one of the best clubs in the world,” the Spanish defender said.
The transfer reunites Chavarría with Alonso, who has been closely linked with the player since his time in Spain.
Chelsea see the defender as a player capable of providing energy, defensive strength and consistency on the left side of the defence.
Chavarría’s career has been built gradually. He developed through the Spanish lower divisions before playing for Zaragoza and eventually establishing himself at Rayo Vallecano.
His performances in La Liga have helped him attract attention from bigger clubs.
His move to Chelsea also comes as the club looks to replace Marc Cucurella, who has left Stamford Bridge for Real Madrid. Reports indicate that Chavarría is viewed as a direct option for the position under Alonso.
