Julián Álvarez’s future at Atlético Madrid has become one of the major stories of the summer transfer window, with the Argentine striker reportedly pushing strongly for a move away from the Spanish club.
Álvarez is said to be unhappy with the situation at Atlético and wants to join Barcelona, who have identified him as a priority target.
Recent reports indicate that the player’s frustration increased after a planned meeting involving coach Diego Simeone and club chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín did not take place.
According to reports, Álvarez had hoped to discuss his future directly with Simeone and seek the coach’s support for a possible departure.
The absence of both Simeone and Gil Marín from the meeting is said to have left the 26-year-old disappointed.
The Argentine reportedly believes he has been let down by Atlético and is now determined to find a way out of the club.
His preference is understood to be Barcelona, although completing the transfer could prove difficult because of Atlético’s position and the financial demands involved.
Barcelona have been pursuing Álvarez for some time, with sporting director Deco reportedly involved in efforts to explore a deal.
However, Atlético have shown little willingness to give up their star forward. Simeone has publicly insisted that the club’s position remains unchanged despite the growing speculation surrounding the player and Barcelona’s interest.
Reports have also suggested that Atlético have told Álvarez that his immediate options are to remain at the club or consider a transfer under conditions acceptable to the Spanish side.
Álvarez joined Atlético from Manchester City in 2024 in a deal worth up to €95 million, making him one of the club’s biggest signings.
