Ghana’s U-23 national team, the Black Meteors, have opened camp in Accra today, Wednesday, August 5, 2026, as they begin preparations for the upcoming U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The invited local-based players are expected to report to the Erata Hotel in East Legon at 4:00 p.m. for the start of the training camp.
The current squad is made up of players from Ghana Premier League and Division One League clubs, with arrangements to be made separately for foreign-based players.
The technical team, led by head coach Desmond Ofei, will use the initial camping period to assess the players and begin building a competitive squad ahead of Ghana’s qualification campaign.
The Black Meteors are preparing for the U-23 AFCON qualifiers, which also serve as the qualification pathway for the 2028 Olympic Games scheduled to be held in Los Angeles, United States.
Although the qualifying matches are expected to begin during the September/October window, Ghana will not feature in the opening phase after receiving a bye.
The country will join the qualifiers in October, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) yet to announce the pairings.
The players currently in camp are expected to form the foundation of the team as Coach Ofei begins his mission of guiding Ghana back to continental success at the U-23 level.
Training sessions will be held at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra, where the technical team will focus on fitness, tactical organisation and team chemistry.
The Black Meteors have a proud history in African football, having won the U-23 AFCON title in 2019 and represented Ghana at the Olympic Games.
The team will be hoping to build a strong squad capable of competing for qualification and securing another appearance on the global stage.
