The Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Sir Sam Jonah, has tasked the institution’s newly inducted Vice-Chancellor, Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, with reforming the university’s curriculum to position UCC at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence (AI) globally.
Speaking at the official investiture ceremony over the weekend, Sir Sam Jonah said the emergence of artificial intelligence has fundamentally changed the way knowledge is accessed and applied.
He noted that traditional university degrees built largely on theoretical instruction and rote memorisation are no longer sustainable in a technology-driven global economy.
“Machines can now recall facts and process information faster than any human. Our universities can no longer justify awarding degrees based on a student’s ability to memorize text and pass a written exam,” Sir Sam Jonah stated during his address.
The Chancellor urged the new Vice-Chancellor to lead a bold shift towards skills-based learning, stressing that academic programmes must now answer one simple, non-negotiable question: “What can your graduate actually do?”
Sir Sam Jonah argued that universities must deepen human intelligence rather than compete with artificial intelligence if they are to remain relevant in the future.
He called for a curriculum that deliberately develops irreplaceable human qualities, including ethical judgment and moral leadership, empathy and emotional intelligence, courage and complex problem-solving, as well as adaptability in rapidly changing job markets.
Rather than waiting for broader policy reforms, the Chancellor called for immediate action on campus.
He proposed the establishment of AI innovation hubs, the introduction of more project-based assessments, and stronger mentorship programmes involving Ghanaian academics and technology professionals in the diaspora.
Accepting office as UCC’s 12th Vice-Chancellor, Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto pledged to lead a transparent and results-oriented administration.
Prof. Aheto announced an immediate review of UCC’s Corporate Strategic Plan to integrate AI development, digital literacy, and practical competency across all faculties.
“We accept this charge,” the new Vice-Chancellor affirmed. Assuring that UCC will not be left behind.
According to Prof. Aheto, he, together with the new leadership, will transform UCC into a hub of innovation, producing graduates who are not just employable, but are actively shaping the digital future.
