Argentina captain Lionel Messi has expressed gratitude to God after leading his country to another FIFA World Cup final, saying he can no longer ask for more following everything he has achieved in football.
Messi made the remarks after Argentina’s victory over England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final, a result that secured the South American side a place in the tournament’s final.
Speaking during his post-match interview, Messi was reminded of comments he made after Argentina’s victory over Egypt earlier in the competition, when he said, “God had a plan for me.” Asked whether he believed God still had another plan for him, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner responded with humility.
“I don’t know, honestly. After everything we’ve been through, we can’t ask for more than that,” Messi said.
The 39-year-old described reaching another World Cup final as a remarkable achievement, regardless of the outcome of the championship match.
“Just playing another final is an amazing thing. God is great, and He always has something else, but honestly, I can no longer ask God for more,” he added.
Messi also reflected on his journey both on and off the pitch, expressing appreciation for the blessings he has received throughout his career and personal life.
“I am grateful for everything God has given me, whether in my sports career or in my personal life. And as I always say, as for the rest… It will be God’s will. God knows,” he said.
The Argentine captain has enjoyed one of the most decorated careers in football history, winning multiple league titles, UEFA Champions League trophies, the Copa América and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He also holds a record eight Ballon d’Or awards and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players the sport has ever produced.
Argentina’s victory over England has given Messi another opportunity to compete for football’s biggest prize.
Having inspired his country throughout the tournament, he will now aim to help Argentina win another World Cup title when they take to the field in the final.
