He was arrested as part of the inquiry into alleged financial and procurement irregularities at the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD), where he previously held the position of executive secretary.

EOCO has indicated that Mr. Aboagye, along with former IMCCoD accountant Gerald Appiah and other unidentified individuals, is under investigation for the alleged misappropriation, misapplication, diversion, and theft of public funds totalling approximately GH¢55 million.

The anti-corruption agency stated that the investigation was initiated following a petition from the current executive secretary of IMCCoD, which requested further inquiries into a forensic audit conducted between August 1, 2022, and February 2, 2025.

EOCO noted that the suspected crimes being investigated include conspiracy to steal, theft, abuse of public office for personal gain, causing financial loss to the state, misappropriation of public funds, fraud by pretences, money laundering, and other related offenses.

The arrest of Mr. Aboagye led to a gathering of supporters and sympathisers at the EOCO headquarters, who called for his release.

In response, military personnel, national security agents, and police officers were deployed to the area to maintain order and ensure the smooth flow of traffic.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned the arrest, characterising it as an effort to intimidate its members and distract from pressing national issues.
