Firefighters rescue trapped driver after tanker accident at Amanase

Firefighters from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have rescued a driver who became trapped after a HOWO tanker veered off the Accra–Kumasi Highway and crashed into a nearby bush at Amanase in the Eastern Region.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, July 12, 2026, and involved a HOWO tanker bearing registration number 11 AG 2649.

The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Kumasi towards Accra when it left the road under circumstances that are yet to be fully established.

A seven-member rescue team from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station responded promptly to the distress call and arrived at the scene to find the driver trapped inside the damaged vehicle.

Using specialised rescue equipment, the firefighters successfully extricated the victim from the wreckage.

Following the rescue operation, the driver was handed over to the police and subsequently transported to the Suhum Government Hospital for treatment.

Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded in the incident.

Preliminary findings suggest the tanker may have veered off the highway as a result of mechanical failure or human error, although investigations are still underway to establish the exact cause of the crash.

The tanker sustained extensive damage to its front section, highlighting the severity of the impact.

The Ghana National Fire Service has meanwhile reiterated the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and strict adherence to road safety regulations.
