Gov’t to blame for sanitation crisis – Bekwai MP

The Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Ralph Poku-Adusei, has blamed the government for the worsening sanitation situation in parts of the country, accusing the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, of failing to provide effective leadership in addressing the challenge.

According to the lawmaker, recent flooding incidents and the growing problem of choked drains and indiscriminate dumping of refuse point to what he described as a failure of governance rather than merely poor public attitudes toward sanitation.

The Bekwai MP argued that the current administration cannot absolve itself of responsibility for the deteriorating sanitation conditions, particularly in the national capital.

“Government must take responsibility for the sanitation crisis we are witnessing today. You cannot continue to blame residents alone when enforcement and waste management fall squarely within the mandate of the authorities,” he said.

The MP further aimed the Greater Accra Regional Minister, accusing her of not being proactive enough in dealing with sanitation-related challenges across the region.

“Linda Ocloo is sleeping on the job. The situation in Accra is getting worse by the day, and the leadership expected from the Regional Minister has not been forthcoming,” he stated.

He argued that successive warnings about blocked drains and illegal structures along waterways had not been matched with decisive action from the relevant authorities.

The Regional Minister herself had previously warned Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives against poor performance, insisting that sanitation remained a key benchmark for measuring their effectiveness.

She cautioned that underperforming officials would face consequences if they failed to deliver results in their jurisdictions.

At a previous media engagement, Madam Ocloo said, “The people of this region are tired of words. They want results, and they want them now.”

She also warned that poor sanitation and choked drains were unacceptable and required urgent attention from local authorities.
