Deschamps defends Mbappé, says captain image is misunderstood

France national team coach Didier Deschamps has strongly defended his captain, Kylian Mbappé, saying the forward’s public image does not reflect how he is inside the squad.

Deschamps insists Mbappé is mature, respected by teammates, and fully trusted as leader of the team.

Speaking about growing public criticism and media portrayals of the French star, Deschamps rejected claims that Mbappé behaves like a “dictator” in the dressing room.

He said such descriptions are far from reality and do not represent the atmosphere within the team.

“You guys make Kylian Mbappé seem like a dictator… the reality is the opposite,” Deschamps said. “His public image does not reflect reality at all. Kylian has always been mature and the whole team follows him.”

Mbappé, who captains the France national football team  and one of the leading goal scorers in the ongoing 2026 FIFA world cup, has often been under intense media attention due to his status as one of the world’s most famous footballers.

At just 27, he already carries major responsibility for both club and country, which has sometimes led to debates about his leadership style.

However, Deschamps made it clear that within the squad, Mbappé is seen as a unifying figure rather than a divisive one.

He praised the forward for his ability to communicate well with teammates both on and off the pitch, saying this has strengthened team spirit.

“I am very happy to have Kylian as captain,” Deschamps added. “Whenever he speaks on or off the pitch, he represents the whole group.”

Mbappé was appointed France captain in 2023 following the international retirement of Hugo Lloris.

Since then, he has led a new generation of French players, including young talents stepping into major international tournaments.

Deschamps’ comments show a common issue faced by high-profile athletes, differences between public perception and internal team reality.

While fans and media often focus on personality narratives, coaches and teammates tend to judge leadership based on daily training, discipline, and performance.
