ECG shuts down Mallam and Achimota substations amidst flooding

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have temporarily shut down the Mallam and Achimota primary substations after heavy rains caused severe flooding in parts of the Greater Accra Region.

In a joint statement, the two utility companies explained that they took the precaution to protect lives and ensure safety after floodwaters entered and affected critical electricity infrastructure at the substations.

They said the rising water levels created serious risks for both equipment and staff, making it unsafe to continue operations.

As a result, they suspended power supply at the affected stations until conditions improve.

GRIDCo and ECG added that they are closely monitoring the situation while technical teams assess the full extent of damage to both transmission and distribution systems.

The companies warned that ongoing rainfall and flooding could also lead to temporary power outages in other areas where safety concerns arise.

They urged the public to remain cautious and report any fallen electricity poles, exposed wires, collapsed lines, or flooded electrical installations to the nearest ECG office or through official customer service channels.

According to them, quick reporting will help emergency teams respond faster and reduce risks to lives and property.

GRIDCo and ECG apologised to customers for the disruption and thanked them for their patience and understanding during the outage.

They assured the public that electricity will be restored as soon as conditions become safe and operations can resume without danger to workers or equipment.
