Flooding in Accra leaves many stranded

Many residents across parts of the Greater Accra Region are stranded in their homes after heavy overnight rains caused widespread flooding.

Vehicle movements across major roads are also stationed.

The rainfall started late on Sunday, June 28, and has continued into the early hours of Monday, June 29, 2026, leaving several roads underwater and disrupting movement across the capital.

Floodwaters have submerged major roads, making it difficult for both pedestrians and drivers to move around. In some areas, traffic has slowed significantly as vehicles cautiously pass through flooded sections, while other motorists have abandoned their routes entirely.

The flooding has severely affected the Monday morning commute, leaving many residents struggling to reach workplaces, schools, and business centres.

Long traffic queues and waterlogged streets have added to the disruption.

Residents and road users have reported flooding in several locations, including Atomic Roundabout in Madina, parts of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, sections of the N1 Highway, the Accra–Kasoa road, Weija, Mallam, Achimota, Spintex, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction, and nearby communities.

Beyond the roads, floodwaters have entered some homes and shops in vulnerable communities. Occupants rushed to move furniture, goods, and personal belongings to safer places as water levels continued to rise.

Authorities have advised motorists and commuters to stay away from flooded roads to reduce the risk of accidents. Residents living in flood-prone areas have also been encouraged to remain alert and move to higher ground where necessary.

Accra continues to face recurring flooding during periods of heavy rainfall. Poor drainage systems, indiscriminate waste disposal, and rapid urban growth are often identified as major factors contributing to the problem.

Emergency officials are expected to assess the extent of the damage as authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide updates.
