Obaatanpa radio alleges attack on station, calls for investigation

Management of Obaatanpa Radio has strongly condemned what it describes as a violent invasion of its premises by a group of individuals, an incident the station says resulted in the assault of staff members and the temporary shutdown of its operations.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Kasoa-based radio station claimed the incident occurred following discussions on its Wednesday morning programme concerning internal affairs within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to the station, a group led by the Awutu Senya East Municipal Chief Executive, Seth Serwonoo Banini, and the Central Regional Chairman of the NDC, Dr. Richard Kofi Asiedu, arrived at the premises shortly after the programme had aired. Several other individuals were also said to have accompanied them.

Obaatanpa Radio alleged that the confrontation escalated, with its Morning Show Host and Producer reportedly subjected to verbal abuse and physical assault.

The station further claimed that members of the group entered the studios during a live broadcast and interrupted transmission by switching off broadcasting equipment.

Management said staff were ordered to leave the premises before the facility was allegedly locked, forcing the station off air.

Describing the development as a serious threat to press freedom, Obaatanpa Radio expressed concern over what it called an attempt to intimidate journalists and interfere with the work of the media.

Management noted that a formal complaint has been filed with the Central East Regional Police Command and praised the police for responding promptly to the incident.

The station has appealed to law enforcement authorities to conduct a full investigation into the matter and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.

Obaatanpa Radio also disclosed that CCTV footage captured during the incident would be made available to support investigations and help establish the facts surrounding the alleged attack.

Despite the disruption to its operations, management reaffirmed its commitment to responsible, balanced and professional journalism, insisting that it will continue to serve the public without fear or favour.
