10 remanded over suspected narcotics trafficking at Atonsu

Ten persons have been remanded into police custody by the Nsuta Circuit Court over their alleged involvement in narcotics trafficking following a major intelligence-led police operation at Atonsu-Bokuro in the Ashanti Region.

The suspects were arrested during a coordinated anti-narcotics exercise conducted by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Police Command as part of an intensified crackdown on the illegal drug trade across the Kumasi Metropolis.

The operation formed part of a wider security exercise targeting communities identified through intelligence as hotspots for the distribution and sale of illicit drugs, including Atonsu-Bokuro, Asafo, Asawase, Krofrom, Buokrom, Asokwa and Kenyase.

According to police, the suspects were arrested after officers raided several locations believed to be used for the storage and distribution of narcotic substances.

During the operation, law enforcement officers recovered quantities of suspected cannabis, tramadol, ecstasy tablets, amphetamine tablets, suspected cocaine and other controlled substances believed to be linked to the illegal trade.

All the exhibits have been secured for forensic examination as investigations continue.

The ten accused persons were subsequently arraigned before the Nsuta Circuit Court, where the prosecution prayed the court to remand them to allow investigators to complete their inquiries and trace other individuals believed to be connected to the alleged drug trafficking network.

The court granted the prosecution’s request and remanded all ten suspects into police custody. They are expected to reappear before the court on dates to be communicated as investigations progress.
