Tension at Central University as SRC week is abruptly suspended

Tension has broken out at Central University after management abruptly cancelled the remaining activities of this year’s SRC Week celebrations.

The cancellation comes after an incident involving the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), which reportedly entered the campus during SRC Week activities and arrested several students.

Central University later confirmed in a statement dated Friday, June 19, 2026, that five individuals are currently in NACOC custody in connection with the incident linked to the celebrations.

The university said it has begun discussions with NACOC and other authorities to fully understand what happened and gather verified details.

“At this stage, the University is engaging with NACOC and other relevant authorities to establish the facts and obtain verified information regarding the circumstances surrounding the matter,” the statement said.

Management also said it would avoid speculation while investigations continue and allow due process to guide the next steps.

As a precaution, the university suspended all remaining SRC Week activities pending a full review of the incident and the institution’s event management procedures.

“All remaining SRC Week activities have been suspended pending a review of the circumstances surrounding the incident and existing event management protocols,” the statement noted.

The university further assured students, staff, parents, alumni and the general public that it is cooperating fully with authorities and remains committed to maintaining discipline, safety, and order on campus.

The decision has left several vendors unhappy and demanding refunds for losses they incurred.

One vendor said she travelled from Amasaman to the campus specifically for the event. She explained that she paid GHS1,000 as a vendor fee and spent an extra GHS250 transporting her goods.

“I paid GHS1,000 and brought all my items here only to be told the programme has been cancelled,” she lamented.

Another vendor also expressed frustration, saying neither the university management nor SRC leaders informed them properly about the cancellation. She claimed she only heard about it through a friend who saw a post on Snapchat.

In another video circulating online, an angry vendor demanded her money back and accused the SRC of fraud in the handling of the situation.

Efforts to reach the Central University SRC for comment have so far been unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, affected vendors continue to demand clarity and refunds, insisting they should not suffer financial losses due to the sudden cancellation of the programme.
