The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has taken a major step toward improving sanitation in the city with the introduction of a mechanical road sweeper aimed at enhancing waste management and restoring Kumasi’s image as the “Garden City of West Africa.”
The new equipment is expected to strengthen cleaning operations across the metropolis by improving efficiency in the removal of dust, litter and other debris from major streets.
Officials say the initiative will also support broader efforts to improve public health, promote environmental sustainability and enhance the visual appeal of the city.
The road sweeper was recently demonstrated in parts of the Central Business District (CBD), attracting attention from residents and traders.
The exercise was conducted by City Experts Group, a sanitation services provider working in partnership with the KMA.
During the demonstration, the machine was deployed along busy commercial areas, including the Pampaso stretch, the Kejetia Roundabout, and the Adum business enclave.
It operated along the streets, effectively clearing accumulated dust and waste within a short period, while minimising the need for manual sweeping.
Many residents and traders who observed the exercise expressed satisfaction with the performance of the machine.
They described it as a modern and timely intervention that could significantly improve cleanliness in Kumasi if sustained and properly managed.
The introduction of the mechanical sweeper forms part of a broader sanitation partnership between the KMA and City Experts Group.
Under the arrangement, the company is responsible for supporting waste collection, street sweeping, and dust-control operations in key parts of the metropolis.
The management of City Experts Group has assured the public of its readiness to deliver effective services.
The company’s manager, Mr. Shaibu, stated that the firm has the technical capacity, equipment, and logistics needed to maintain high sanitation standards in Kumasi.
He further noted that the company is committed to supporting the Assembly’s vision of creating a cleaner, healthier, and more attractive urban environment for residents and visitors.
The KMA believes the introduction of mechanised street cleaning marks a significant improvement in its sanitation strategy and is expected to complement existing efforts to keep Kumasi clean.
