Two pupils of Alice Elites Academy at Assin Edubiase in the Central Region have died while 40 others sustained injuries following a tragic school bus accident at Assin Homaho in the Assin South District.
The fatal accident occurred on the morning of Monday, June 1, 2026, when a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus transporting the pupils reportedly lost control and crashed along the Assin Homaho stretch.
The victims were said to be travelling to school when the incident happened.
The two deceased pupils, a boy and a girl, were pronounced dead following the crash, throwing the Assin Edubiase community into mourning.
Several of the injured children reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for emergency treatment.
Confirming the incident, the Central North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander, DSP Wonder Lumor, disclosed that all 40 affected pupils were quickly evacuated from the scene by emergency responders and residents who rushed to assist.
According to him, 22 injured pupils were transported to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital, while 18 others were sent to the Assin Edubiase Health Centre for medical attention.
DSP Lumor later confirmed that all the injured pupils had received treatment and were subsequently discharged to their families after doctors assessed their conditions.
Parents and relatives reportedly rushed to the hospitals and the accident scene after news of the tragedy spread across the community.
Some emotionally distressed parents were seen searching for their children among the injured survivors.
Although the exact cause of the crash is yet to be officially established, police investigators have launched a full probe into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Preliminary reports suggest the driver may have lost control of the vehicle on the stretch, but authorities say investigations are ongoing.
