ECG to complete critical Power upgrade works in June

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says critical power upgrade works currently underway in parts of the country are expected to be completed in June, a move the company believes will significantly improve electricity stability and reliability, especially within the Greater Kumasi enclave.

According to ECG, the ongoing exercise involves replacing weak cables and upgrading existing 265 sqmm conductors to larger 400 sqmm conductors to boost power transfer capacity and reduce system overloads.

The company explained that the project forms part of broader nationwide interventions aimed at strengthening Ghana’s electricity distribution network amid increasing demand and recurring power fluctuations.

Speaking on the upgrades, ECG said the works are expected to enhance voltage stability, minimise outages, and improve service delivery to households and businesses once completed.

Earlier this year, ECG commenced a major transformer replacement and upgrade programme across selected substations in Accra, including Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa, and Lashibi.

The utility provider noted that transformers in the affected substations were being upgraded from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA to improve load-handling capacity in fast-growing communities.

ECG’s Acting Director of Communications, Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, previously stated that the upgrade programme represents “a critical step toward strengthening infrastructure, improving system resilience, and delivering a more reliable and efficient electricity service to all customers.”

Meanwhile, Energy Minister Dr John Abdulai Jinapor has also inspected some of the ongoing projects and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the country’s power distribution infrastructure.

The ongoing works have, however, resulted in planned power outages in several communities across Greater Accra, Ashanti, and parts of the Central Region as engineers undertake maintenance and installation activities.
