President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will allocate GH¢10 million each to technical universities across the country in the 2027 national budget, as part of efforts to strengthen technical and vocational education and improve infrastructure and training capacity.
The President announced an engagement outlining the government’s education and skills development priorities, stressing that technical universities will be positioned as key drivers of industrialisation and youth employment.
According to him, the funding will be used to improve infrastructure, upgrade laboratories and workshops, and expand practical training facilities to better align graduates with industry needs.
He explained that the government’s long-term development strategy places strong emphasis on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), noting that skills-based education is critical to addressing unemployment and boosting productivity.
“We are committed to strengthening our technical universities to ensure they have the capacity to train the kind of workforce our economy needs for transformation and industrial growth,” President Mahama said.
He added that the intervention will also support research, innovation, and partnerships between technical universities and industry players to improve practical learning outcomes.
Education sector officials say the allocation is expected to reduce infrastructure deficits that have long affected many technical universities, particularly in areas such as laboratories, lecture halls, and equipment for hands-on training.
The announcement has been welcomed by stakeholders in the education sector, who argue that sustained investment in technical education is essential for Ghana’s economic transformation agenda.
Government has indicated that the GH¢10 million per institution allocation will be rolled out in phases beginning with the 2027 fiscal year, subject to parliamentary approval of the national budget.
The initiative forms part of broader reforms aimed at repositioning technical universities as centres of innovation, entrepreneurship, and applied research to support national development.
