Former Chelsea captain César Azpilicueta has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a remarkable career that lasted more than 20 years.
The 36-year-old Spanish defender confirmed his decision in an emotional farewell message shared on social media, where he thanked the clubs, teammates, coaches, and fans who supported him throughout his journey.
Azpilicueta said it was “time to start a new chapter” after living his dream in football for two decades.
“After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life,” he wrote.
He admitted that it was not easy to make the decision, describing football as something that has “given me everything”.
Azpilicueta began his professional career at Osasuna before moving to Marseille, where he developed into a promising young defender.
He later joined Chelsea in 2012, where he became one of the club’s most important players and eventually captain.
During his time at Chelsea, he won several major trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Champions League.
He was known for his leadership, consistency, and ability to play in multiple defensive positions.
The Spanish also represented the Spain national team for over a decade, earning more than 40 caps and taking part in major international tournaments.
In his message, Azpilicueta expressed gratitude to all the clubs he played for, including Osasuna, Marseille, Chelsea, Atlético Madrid, and Sevilla. He also thanked his national team colleagues and supporters worldwide.
Azpilicueta leaves the game as one of the most respected defenders of his generation, admired for his professionalism, discipline, and long-lasting impact on European football.
