Lawyers for Ghanaian political figure Kwame Baffoe say the High Court’s decision to grant him bail is an important victory for constitutional rights after what they described as an earlier unfair court decision.
Kwesi Botchwey Jnr, who is part of Baffoe’s legal team, explained that the High Court used its authority to reverse the decision of a lower court that had ordered Baffoe to remain in custody.
“The bail represents respect for human rights, the constitution and freedom of speech,” he said.
Baffoe, who pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, was granted bail of 100,000 cedis. As part of the bail conditions, he must hand over his travel documents and report regularly to the police.
Botchwey also said the prosecution did not oppose the bail request. He added that the alleged offence is only a misdemeanour and would normally not require someone to stay in detention for a long period.
He confirmed that his client has met all the bail conditions, has been released, and will continue to appear in court for the trial when required.
