Ghanaian athlete Florence Agyemang has made history after winning Ghana’s first medal at the ongoing 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra.
The talented runner, who represents the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), delivered an outstanding performance in the women’s 400 metres final to claim bronze with a personal best time of 51.87 seconds.
Florence finished behind Ethiopia’s Ajayba Aliy Ahmed, who won gold with 51.54 seconds, and Botswana’s Obakeng Kamberuk, who took silver in 51.79 seconds.
Despite facing strong competition, the young Ghanaian showed great determination and composure to secure a place on the podium for Team Ghana.
The medal is even more impressive because it marks the third time Florence Agyemang has broken her personal best since the 2026 Mini-GUSA Games.
Her rapid improvement has highlighted her as one of Ghana’s fastest-rising athletes in track and field.
Florence was born in December 2005 and competes mainly in the 200m and 400m events.
Before the African Championships, her previous personal best in the 400m was 53.47 seconds, recorded earlier this year in Cape Coast.
Her latest time of 51.87 seconds shows remarkable progress within a short period.
