Veteran Nollywood actress Oby Kechere, popularly known for her iconic “Madam Koi Koi” role, has passed away after a prolonged illness.

Her death was confirmed by the Directors Guild of Nigeria, which announced that the actress died on April 27, 2026, bringing an end to a career spanning more than two decades.

Oby Kechere rose to fame in the early 2000s following her memorable role as “Ms Koi Koi” in the popular Nollywood film Aki na Ukwa. Her performance in the film made her a household name across Africa and earned her lasting recognition in the industry.

Beyond acting, she was also a film director and an active member of the Nigerian movie industry, contributing significantly to the growth of Nollywood. She served as Vice Chairman of the Abuja chapter of the Directors Guild and was widely respected for her professionalism and mentorship of younger actors.

The late actress had been battling an undisclosed illness for some time before her passing.

Tributes have since begun pouring in from colleagues, fans, and industry stakeholders, many describing her as a dedicated and influential figure whose impact will be remembered for years to come.

Oby Kechere, a graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, began her acting career in 2001 and featured in several productions, including the popular August Meeting film series.

Her death marks yet another significant loss to Nollywood, with many in the industry mourning the passing of a veteran whose work helped shape African cinema.
