Lionel Scaloni reflects on painful West Ham FA Cup loss

Lionel Scaloni has shared a deeply personal story about how a single match during his time in England changed the course of his life forever.

Scaloni recalled his time with West Ham United, saying his experience was “very good” until one dramatic final that altered everything.

He was part of the West Ham team that faced Liverpool FC in the FA Cup final under manager Rafael Benítez.

West Ham were close to making history.

They were leading 3-2 with just about a minute and a half left on the clock.

Scaloni described the moment as unforgettable for the club, but also the turning point that changed his personal journey.

He explained a key incident late in the game when he believed a Liverpool player was injured.

“I heard him scream as if he had a cramp or had hurt himself,” Scaloni said.

Thinking the match should be stopped, he kicked the ball out of play to allow treatment.

However, Liverpool quickly restarted the game.

From the throw-in, the ball was worked forward and eventually reached former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who struck a long-range shot to equalise at 3-3.

The match went into extra time and then penalties, where West Ham eventually lost the final.

Scaloni admitted that moment changed his future completely.

He was on loan at West Ham, and there was a possibility he could stay permanently.

But after the defeat, that opportunity faded.

“The manager, Alan Pardew, told me, ‘We’ll talk again later,’ and I realised I wasn’t going to stay,” he said.

He later moved to Spain, joining RCD Mallorca, a decision that shaped the rest of his life.

It was there he met his wife and started a family.

Reflecting on the experience, Scaloni said such moments feel “predestined,” suggesting that the painful defeat ultimately led him to where he is today.
