The Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has warned that Ghana’s energy sector is facing a major debt problem, with nearly $200 million owed to fuel suppliers.
He said his team obtained this information through private intelligence and cautioned that failure to settle the debt could threaten the country’s electricity supply.
“We have picked intelligence that this government owes fuel suppliers close to $200 million.”
He stressed that this situation is why greater transparency is needed, particularly on how funds from energy-related taxes are used.
He referenced a previous law that required a report by March 31 on the use of a one-cedi fuel levy.
According to him, paying off these debts is critical to stabilising the power sector and ensuring a reliable electricity supply.
