Ghana and the European Union have signed a new Security and Defence Partnership aimed at addressing emerging threats and strengthening stability in the region.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 14 April, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ghana) said the agreement provides a structured framework for cooperation between the two sides.

It said the partnership would focus on tackling terrorism, improving maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and addressing cyber threats. It also aims to strengthen border management and support peacekeeping operations.

Under the arrangement, the EU is expected to provide training, technical support and equipment to Ghana’s security agencies.

The ministry said the agreement builds on years of existing cooperation, bringing them under a more coordinated and forward-looking framework.

It also dismissed suggestions that the deal would allow foreign military bases or troops to be stationed in Ghana.

“Ghana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity remain fully protected under this arrangement,” the Ministry stated.

The government added that the partnership aligns with Ghana’s security priorities while maintaining its commitment to Pan-Africanism and neutrality in global conflicts.

It further assured that the country would not enter into any agreement that could undermine the safety of neighbouring states.

Authorities also rejected circulating online claims about the deal as false, insisting the partnership is designed to serve Ghana’s national interest.

The ministry said the agreement comes at a time when West Africa faces growing security challenges, including violent extremism in the Sahel and increased maritime threats.

It added that the partnership is intended to help Ghana contribute to regional stability and improve overall security.
