Two suspected armed robbers killed after MoMo attack in Tema

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that two persons suspected of armed robbery have been shot and killed during a gunfire exchange with police following a robbery incident in Tema.

In a press release dated April 13, the Tema Regional Police Command stated that the event took place on Monday morning at approximately 8:30 am in Tema Community 5.

According to the police, the suspects had assaulted and robbed a mobile money (MoMo) vendor before attempting to escape the scene.

Initial investigations suggest that the victim operates a MoMo shop located at the Aba Fosuah Plaza in Community 5.

One of the suspects, who was riding as a passenger on a motorbike, allegedly approached the vendor under the guise of conducting a cash-out transaction.

As the vendor was retrieving her phone to facilitate the transaction, the suspect brandished a pistol and demanded that she surrender a bag containing cash.

The victim resisted, resulting in a struggle involving both the pillion passenger and the motorbike rider. During the altercation, the pillion passenger shot the vendor in the leg, after which the suspects seized the cash and fled on the motorbike.

The police reported that a patrol team from the Tema Regional Operations Unit, which had been stationed nearby for security duties at an event, promptly responded to a distress call and pursued the suspects.

The suspects, who were riding a black Royal motorbike with registration number M-24-GE 778, allegedly opened fire on the pursuing officers near a junction close to Smart Hotel in Community 6.

The police returned fire, and in the subsequent exchange, both suspects sustained gunshot injuries and fell from the motorbike.

The suspects were taken to the Police Hospital for medical care, but were declared dead on arrival by a medical officer.

Their remains have since been placed in the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification, and autopsy.
