Parliament Constitutes 7-Member Committee To Probe Leaked Audio About IGP
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has proposed forming a special seven-member committee to investigate an alleged leaked tape plotting the removal of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
According to Mr Bagbin, the committee will consist of three legislators from each side of the House and a technical person to help with the investigations.
“This issue goes beyond Defence and Interior Committee, and we need some of you who are good in information technology (IT) and other areas to submit your talents and skills to the committee for this work to be done,” he said.
This comes after the Parliamentary Minority caucus demanded a thorough forensic audit to determine the authenticity and veracity of the leaked tape.
The Deputy Minority Leader, Armah Kofi Buah, presenting the request in Parliament, said, “It boils down to the security of this country, and it is important that this House wants to know the authenticity of that leaked tape.”
Portions of an audio tape purported to be a conversation between a senior member of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) and a police commissioner were leaked to the public.
The unidentified persons were allegedly plotting to remove the current IGP from office ahead of the 2024 elections due to his reluctance to align the police force’s activities with the interests of the ruling party.
They also expressed reservations about his leadership style and rumoured ties to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
