A deadly confrontation over missing mining equipment in the Western North Region has left one man dead and another critically injured.
The clash unfolded in the Sui Electoral Area of Sefwi-Wiawso, sparking fear and outrage within the tight-knit community.
It began when a man only identified as Vincent, reportedly, accused two others, Prince Armah and another man called Pizzaro, of stealing his illegal mining pumping machine and a stash of gold dust referred to locally as “black”.
Eyewitnesses say the tension quickly exploded, and Vincent allegedly pulled a gun and fired at the men.
Prince Armah was killed instantly. Pizzaro, however, survived but remains in critical condition at the Sefwi-Wiawso Municipal Hospital.
Community members are reeling from the violence.
“We’re heartbroken,” said Benedict Arthur, the Assembly Member for the area. “This is not what we stand for. We need peace more than ever now.”
Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for Vincent, who fled the scene and remains at large.
The incident has intensified local concern over the rise in violence connected to illegal mining, which has become a growing source of tension and crime.
Residents say they fear the situation could worsen if left unchecked, while many are calling for greater community engagement and support from authorities to stem the tide of lawlessness in the area.
