The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused President John Dramani Mahama and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of intolerance towards individuals who criticise the government.
This comes after the Sunyani East Communications Officer of the NPP, Abubakar Yakubu, also known as Baba Amando, was remanded by an Accra Circuit Court.
Yakubu was arrested on Monday, April 13, 2026, as part of an investigation into claims of offensive behaviour, spreading false information, and making statements that could cause fear and panic.
He has since been remanded in custody for two weeks.
Speaking on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong accused the Mahama government of trying to silence people who disagree with them.
“The NDC government led by John Dramani Mahama has become so intolerable that it does not welcome divergent views or criticism. President Mahama seems to have forgotten that Ghana operates under constitutional rule,” he said.
He said the current government is moving away from democratic values, especially when it comes to freedom of speech.
Mr Kodua Frimpong also compared the situation to the previous administration led by Nana Akufo-Addo, saying the NPP government allowed more freedom for people to speak their minds.
He said that even when opposition leaders, including Mahama at the time, made strong and harsh comments, the previous government did not try to silence them.
“There were very unpalatable remarks directed at the previous government. Yet we remained tolerant because we understood constitutional rule and freedom of expression,” he added.
The NPP says it is worried about what it sees as a pattern of people being arrested and taken to court over things they say in public.
Justin Kodua Frimpong claimed that several people have recently been “detained and arraigned before courts” because of comments they made publicly.
