Obuasi SHTS headmaster at home — Police clarify arrest claims

The police have clarified that the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai, is currently at home after being granted bail, following an earlier statement by Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka that he had been arrested.

Mubarak Muntaka, the Interior Minister, told Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, that Mr Abdulai had been arrested as investigations continued into allegations of sexual misconduct involving female students.

However, speaking during an interview, the Bekwai Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Lloyd Baidoo, explained that although the headmaster had been arrested, he was no longer in police custody.

According to ASP Baidoo, the police arrested Mr Abdulai following a complaint lodged by a student on August 4, 2026, but subsequently granted him bail.

He added that investigators had completed work on the complaint and forwarded the case docket to the Attorney General for advice. The police are awaiting further direction on the next steps in the case.

The headmaster is under investigation for allegedly abusing 19 female students sexually.

The allegations against the headmaster have not been established in court, and the case remains subject to the appropriate investigative and legal processes.
